  • MINISTRY OF INFORMATION, CULTURE AND TOURISM

    Ministry of information Culture and tourism

    The Ministry is responsible for tracking activities of government and disseminating such timely information to the public with the Management of the image, reputation and the promotion of the culture of the people and Government of Imo State.

    Some of its duties are but not limited to:

    • Supervise activities of Imo State Broadcasting Services and liaising with other information agencies to disseminate accurate and unbiased reportage to the public.
    • Preserve, develop and promote the cultural wealth and the tourist attractions of the state and culture people of Imo State.
    • Strategize on using various medium of communication to reach diverse audiences.
    • Conduct research on the heritage of State of Imo and advise government, promote and monitor tourism activities through robust policy frame aimed at exploring the tourism industry to attract investors’ participation in the development of the industry.
    • Regulate, classify, standardize and monitor the activities of hotels, nightclubs, fast food services and other tourism enterprises thereby paying attention to hospitality principles, technicalities and strategies in the State in line with global standard and national trend
    • Promote the cultural values abundant in the State through organizing and participating in exhibition, festivals of arts and culture, acquiring and preserving any artistic or cultural materials suitable for tourism, renaissance of culture, rebirth of tourism and reconstruction of societal cultural values for revenue generation, job creation, positive wealth and rural development as well as collaborating with individuals, corporate bodies and groups in show-casing the cultural diversity of the State.
    • Organize workshops, conferences and training for capacity building and consolidation of tourism in the state.

  • MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

    MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

    The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is responsible for the educational sector in the State. It seeks to elevate the standard of education and  ensures that every child in Imo State enrolls for education that would develop their individual potential and to acquire the knowledge.

    Some of it duties include but are not limited to:

    • Curriculum revision of both primary and secondary schools.
    • Implementation of government policies.
    • Liaise with Federal Ministry of Education, Universal Basic Education Board and other agencies involved in education development.
    • Provision of instructional materials, infrastructure and other facilities in schools.

    The Ministry of Commerce aims to enhance economic of the State & the development of commerce, industry and services sectors  locally, nationally and globally through the continuous execution of legislation and policies.

    The Ministry of Commerce, and Industry is concerned with the following duties but are not limited to:

    • Register, coordinate and supervise c-operatives societies in the State.
    • Facilitate loans, micro-credit and empowerment programmes for citizens.
    • Supervise commercial activities and other comer related operations in the State.
    • Raise revenue for government through levies, fines and other statutory collections.

    Engineer Henry Chidi Ibe is the Commissioner while Mr Sunday Oyewole Olayode is the Permanent Secretary.

    This Ministry is the engine room of the State because of its ability to manage finances of Imo State including managing, controlling and monitoring federal revenues and expenditures. thus leaving a positive impact on the State’s economy.

    Some of the main responsibilities of the Ministry are but are not limited to:

    • Implementing government decision on financial policies.
    • Improving the internally generated revenues of the State.
    • Direct and supervise other agencies under the Ministry and Revenue Board.
    • Prepare a budget for presentation to the State Assembly.
    • Economic planning for improvement of the State’s economy.

    The Ministry of Health,Women affairs & social development  is concerned with coordinating, supervising and regulating the health sector in the State for quality delivery of services to the general public and to Promote the general welfare of Women and enhancing their ability to realize their full potentials in various fields of human endeavors.

    Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Implementation of government policies as it relates to healthcare delivery in the State.
    • Partnerships with local and international organizations like UNICEF, UNDP, WHO, SFH for successful implementation of programmes in the State.
    • Maintenance of government hospitals and primary health centres.
    • Recruitment, staffing and general welfare issues of health staff.
    • Control any potential outbreaks of diseases and other infectious diseases.

    Barrister (MRS.) Ngozi Ihuaku Njoku is the Commissioner.

    The ministry is Responsible for the execution of Government’s policy in the Housing and Urban Development sector.

    The areas of responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Land policy and land matters such as land use, allocation, survey services, acquisition of land for state purposes, compensation for acquired lands, servicing and monitoring of Land Use and Allocation Committee and Lands Registry (administration and control).
    • Ensure proper development through Preparation and Monitoring of Development Schemes, monitorPrivate Estate Developers Scheme, develop Master and District Plans for Urban Centres, Urban Renewal Programmes, approval of building plans and layout and Statutory and Regional Planning.
    • Collection of Neighbourhood Improvement Charge (NIC) and preparation and sale of Model Building Plans.
    • Extraction of Laterite.
    • Site selection for government and other institutions.
    • Supervision of the Capital Territory Development Authority.
    • Maintenance of the data bank

    The agriculture sector plays an integral role in the economic development of the State. The State of Imo is widely known for its agriculture industry.

    The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural resources is saddled with the following responsibilities but not limited to:

    • Implement government policies regarding agriculture.
    • Improve the cash and food crops potentials in the State.
    • Facilitate loans and grants for farmers in the State.
    • Provide fertilizers and other farm inputs at subsidized rates.
    • Improve livestock and poultry potentials in the State

    Mr.Udo Mbu Agoha is the Commissioner.

    The Ministry is in charge of maintaining justice in the state as well as other justice related matters.

    The areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

    • Set up Commissions and Tribunals of Inquiry in the State.
    • Administration of justice, administration of Estates and Trustees.
    • Public prosecution and civil litigation.
    • Relations with the judiciary, Judicial Service Commission, State of Imo, Federal Ministry of Justice, Committee on Prerogative of Mercy and Law Enforcement Agencies.
    • Law reporting and revision, compilation, distribution and sale of the Annual Laws of the State, legislative drafting and constitutional matters.
    • Administration of Oaths, human rights and consumer protection, provision of legal aid to the poor, legal advisory and Alternative Dispute Resolution Services (Mediation).
    • Appointment and supervision of the activities of Justice of Peace in the State.
    • Initiate legislation for the maintenance of peace, order and good government within the State.

    Barrister Miletus Maduakolam Onukaogu Nlemedim is the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

    MINISTRY OF WORKS AND TRANSPORT

    The Ministry of Works and Transport is in charge of formulating appropriate policies on management of all government infrastructure as well as transportation issues in the State and promote good standards in the construction industry.

    It areas of operation is wide and includes but are not limited to:

    • Construction, rehabilitation, maintenance and monitoring of government building, state roads and drainages.
    • Mechanical and electrical works (inclusive of certification of mechanical and electrical services in medium and high rise buildings)
    • Liaise with Power Holding Company of Nigeria on settlement of official bills and coordinating and supervising Independent Power Projects in the state.
    • Board of plants and equipment (inclusive of office equipment and staff quarters).
    • Architectural and consultancy services and general civil engineering works inclusive of setting rates for engineering works as well as quality control for civil, engineering and building materials.
    • Deploy and supervise State engineers, coordinate government agencies and ministries responsible for provision of infrastructure in the State.
    • All transportation matters in the state such as registering motor vehicles, issuance and renewal of licenses for commercial and private vehicles, supervision and control of establishment of motor parks, traffic control, educating drivers, motorists and the general public on the proper use of the highways, conduct research on driver behaviour and traffic safety for traffic improvement, register and regulate the conduct of driving schools, regulate and control vehicle inspection tests and certify roadworthy vehicles and liaising with Federal Road Safety Commission

    Hon. Chief (Mrs) Josephine Udoji is the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Transport.

    MINISTRY OF PUBLIC SAFETY, YOUTH AND SPORTS

    The Ministry of  Public Safety, Youth and Sports plays a pivotal role in the State. It creates an enabling environment and act as a catalyst and facilitator for the promotion and development of youth and sports at regional level.

    Its mandate includes but are not limited to:

    • Evolve and implement policies and programmes necessary for all-round development of youths at all levels and youth development matters (citizen and leadership training, youth exchange programmes, National Youth Award Schemes, National Youth Service Corps matters, National Youth Day Celebrations and others)) and  encourage formation of youth clubs.
    • Promote sports and sports related matters like supervision of Imo State Sports Council, Heart land football club and other sporting organizations in the state and relating with National Sports Commission.
    • Provide institutional care and physical structures for development of youth and people with special needs such as juvenile delinquents, destitute and physically challenged persons.
    • Promote recreation in the State through identification and design of open spaces for recreational purposes and facilities through which people can channel their energies.
    • Oversee the welfare of the aged as well as partner up with voluntary organisations in various fields.

    The Ministry is concerned with matters affecting local government and local government administration as well as issues relating to chieftaincy matters in the State of Imo.

    Some responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Monitor the activities and performance of all Local Governments in the State in order to ensure compliance with the local government laws and other regulations made under the law.
    • Monitor public utilities under the local government, coordination of the statutory allocation to local government councils (inclusive of loans and grants) and coordination of the affairs of all local government councils and submission of periodic reports thereon to the Governor of the State.
    • Relations with Local Government Councils, Local Government Service Commission, Office of the State Auditor-General for Local Governments and Federal Ministry of State and Local Government Affairs
    • Coordination of Development Plan for local government councils.
    • Market registration and Valuation Matters
    • Train elected functionaries and political office holders at local government level in collaboration with the Local Government Service Commission.
    • Relations with Council of traditional rullers and Chiefs including processing of appointment papers of Chiefs in compliance with the provisions of Part II of the Chiefs’ Laws.
