Succor has finally come the way of Imo State farmers following the pro-active steps taking by the state government to ensure gainful and effective farming practice in the state.

This was disclosed in a meeting of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Domestics Hon Mrs Ogechi Ololo with the officials of Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System in Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), who came in company of the Co-ordinator of Imo State Anchor Borrowers Programme, Dr. Edwin Uche, on Monday.

Hon Ololo who doubles as the Chairman, Taskforce on Food Security had during the meeting, hinted that most farmers in the state don’t use agricultural loan for its purpose. She suggested that inputs should be deployed to the farmers, rather than give them loans which they utilize on domestic and other problems that crop-up in their families.

She gave an instance that the state government could enter into an agreement with land owners on a certain hectare(s) of land, engage them as farmers, provide the seedlings for them, equip them and allow them take care of the farm, after which they enjoy 10% of the total proceeds.

She expressed government’s readiness to create farmers markets in communities that would embrace the initiative, noting that such would ensure immediate and proper off-takers as well as boost agricultural produce for exports to other states.

Ololo frowned at the low turnout of state farmers in the Anchor Borrowers Programme of the Federal Government and re-affirmed the state government’s resolve to encourage farming practice in the state.
She promised to convey their message to Governor Okorocha and urged them to remain hopeful for positive response.

Earlier, the Head, Project Monitoring and Remediation of NIRSAL, Mrs Nkechi Osuji explained that they were in the state to give succor to the state farmers through a partnership programme with the state government.
She eulogised the Deputy Chief of Staff for her wisdom in providing a veritable platform on which the program would thrive.

Adding his voice, the Co-ordinator of Imo State Anchor Borrowers Programme, Dr. Edwin Uche re-assured of his commitment to the project, suggesting that three local government councils of the state could be used for feasibility study.

He commended Hon Ololo on her new assignment as the Chairman on Food Security and expressed confidence that she would make great impacts in the state through the position.

However, NIRSAL is a loan guarantee scheme set up to guarantee 75 per cent loans provided by Deposit Money Banks (DPB) to farmers, as part of efforts to transform the country’s agricultural sector.
